Civil Design Engineer



POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Responsible for the overall design and engineering of Civil systems for projects as assigned from pre-schematic phase through construction closeout under the supervision of a Project Engineer.
REPORTS TO:
Department Head, Civil Engineering Department, with day to day supervision and guidance provided
by Project Engineer.
RELATIONSHIP TO OTHERS:
Participates as a team member with engineering staff on assigned projects. Interacts with clients,
vendors, survey crews and other engineering disciplines.
RESPONSIBILITIES:




  • Act as lead engineer on projects




  • Performs site visits for documentation and cost estimating of existing systems and buildingconditions




  • Coordinates plan layout and drawings




  • Performs Civil calculations and develops appropriate system concepts and layouts




  • Designs Civil systems, including calculations and cost estimating under the supervision of a Project Engineer




  • Prepares technical specifications




  • Reviews and evaluates shop drawings and product submittals




  • Visits construction sites to inspect work in progress or completed




  • Mentors Civil Technicians




  • Prepares Engineering Reports




  • Completes complex and specialty types of design




  • Assists Project Engineers in developing/maintaining department standards




  • Participates in a professional organization




  • Stays abreast of technical advancements in respective field and disseminates information to staff




  • Additional duties as assigned by the Department Head, or Project Engineer




AUTHORITY/SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Direct and supervise Civil Technicians as assigned. May occasionally direct duties of other Design
Engineers as assigned.
PERSONAL QUALITIES:
Ability to interact successfully with all levels of staff, clients and vendors. Able to work in a collaborative
process. Able to plan, organize and implement with successful and timely results. Able to mentor and
direct department teams. Open to change; receptive to new ideas and concepts.
EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION GUIDELINES:
Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering with a minimum of 4 years of experience. Professional
Engineering License in Michigan a must. Proficiency in AutoCAD, Land Desktop, Civil Design, Survey
Software, word processing and spreadsheet management programs with working knowledge of
applicable standards. Microstation/Geopak a plus.
